Michael Snedeker is the executive vice president of Elite Building Corp, a commercial construction company from Waltham, Massachusetts. A long-time resident of the greater Boston area, Michael Snedeker has led the firm in several restaurant renovations at staples such as Strip House in New York and MPD Restaurant which included a full overhaul of the dining area and bar.

When it seems like a restaurant is ready for a renovation, there are a few things to keep in mind as an owner or operator. The first step is to find the right person for the job. The biggest cost of the renovation will be the contractor so make sure you choose a company that not only does good work but is easy to work with, and has a sterling reputation.

Another important consideration is making sure the finances are in order. A complete renovation can cost up to several hundred dollars per square foot, so work with the contractor to estimate costs as accurately as possible and prepare for the worst in case they end up rising.

Furthermore, not every area of a restaurant needs to be renovated at once. Some areas are much more important than others and it’s best to concentrate resources on areas that will provide a bigger return. It may be the case that a simple lighting overhaul or remodeling the bar produces great results.
