#InsteadOfTheOscars
There are better things to do than watch an industry pat itself on the back for three hours.

We could have used this post to show that the Academy’s reputation, past & present, is nowhere near as shiny as they statues they give out — but Cracked did a great job of that already with an article covering the Academy’s dubious legacy & commentary from one of the Academy’s own.
So, we’ll skip past the “why” and get straight to the “what” — what you could be doing #InsteadOfTheOscars.
Idea #1 — Go to the Source: Read the Books that the Movies were Made From.
Here are Goodreads links to the books that filmmakers made their Oscar-nominated movies from:
For SoCal dwellers with a LAPL card, a blog post covering this same topic has helpful links to their online catalog:
Idea #2 — Read Books by or About the Nominees
Here are a couple of examples:
Idea #3 — Visit your Local Comic Book Store
Both Doctor Strange and Suicide Squad are Oscar-nominated, so hit up a comic book store to find the original stories that the filmmakers worked off of.
Idea #4 — Go to the Theatre
“Theater is life. Film is art. Television is furniture.” (unknown)
Instead of watching a piece of furniture present you with a show about how great an art Film is, why not go and experience living art? Watch a live performance, in-person and direct, with no film editors cutting away anything from the actors’ work — and no screens, large or small, getting between you and the Art.
