Hear that? It’s the sound of a liberal bashing patriotism. I’m a liberal, and I don’t think too highly of overt patriotism, but most people need these group identifiers, and it’s not wise to appear to be denigrating them, even in a thoughtful way. I also cringe when I hear a crowd of people screaming “Go USA,” — in any context. But in this nation of near 400 million people, big-loud-football-chant patriotism is a staple.
