Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not supposed to.

There are those who, for one reason or another, loudly declare that we shouldn’t be putting cases on our smartphones. In fact, as one author puts it, you’re not supposed to put a case on your smartphone.

They say that putting a case on a smartphone is tantamount to using it wrong. The only right way to carry your $1,000+ iPhone is caseless, you see. No case. No screen protector. Nothing.

Or so they say.

Let’s unpack that a bit. Then we’ll get into why I believe you absolutely should use a case — even if it’s a cheap one.

Why is using a case supposedly so bad?

The arguments against cases vary in vehemence, coherence and logic. Some are better than others. And some are just nonsense in this writer’s opinion. But here are a few common claims.

  1. A case adds bulk to the phone and makes it uncomfortable to carry and hold. In some cases — literally — that is true. There are cases that are thick and not ideal for someone who wants a sleek and light phone. But not all cases are the same. Some are barely skins that offer a bit of drop protection and shield against scratches.
  2. A case impairs heat
