Britain controlled an empire that spanned the globe. Greece can barely feed itself on loan, and was a plaything for the communists and fascists.
Nationalism of itself is not a bad thing, if it means putting one’s own interests ahead of others, with the understanding that there are benefits to discourse and trade.
Letting one’s own culture and interests be subject to the votes of outsiders is not only anti-intellectual, it is self-destructive.
The EU will go the way of the Latin monetary union of a century and a half ago. This was always inevitable, as “Europeans” are not a people, they are a collection of many peoples, even national borders are often inaccurate for the geographic and cultural bounds.
