Gamification for The Hospitality Industry

Ibis Campus is a training app for hotel staff


Ibis Campus was one of Sebazzo’s first projects.


In early 2013, we were commissioned by Ibis hotels to transform its paper-based training manual into a gamified training web-app. It is accessed daily via the personal smartphones of 900+ food and beverage Ibis employees. The system is designed to teach, test and motivate staff, while providing management with valuable performance metrics.

Ibis Campus is live in many different Ibis hotels throughout the United Kingdom and has now become an integral part of their training process.


Ibis’ food and beverage training is split into four categories: Breakfast, Dinner, Bar and Service. These categories take the shape of hotel floors within the app homescreen. Players swipe up or down to navigate to a training area of choice. When selected, two employees from two separate Ibis hotels are paired together for a knowledge challenge. The challenge comes in the form of a set of multiple choice questions and a timer that starts as soon as the challenge is accepted.

Like any good training game, players are rewarded with badges as they improve and perform well throughout the game. Badges are rewarded for different kinds of positive behaviour like reaching a top score, having a faster than usual reaction time and accessing the game from outside a home country.

Mini-games are unlocked via exceptional performances. These are used to introduce a different element to Ibis Campus which is primarily an educational environment. The mini-games are hotel-themed, easy to play arcade style games.

Ibis Campus encourages fun and healthy competition. Employees play for points and are motivated to learn and improve at their job in order to climb up the leaderboard.

Ibis Campus furnishes management with several types of useful metrics including performance by individual and by hotel, identifies struggling or exceptional employees, trends within teams and problem areas. It also provides the users themselves with useful statistics.


Every content area within Ibis Campus is fully customisable and is controlled by Ibis management. Processes like adding new training content, managing quiz questions, countdown options and signing up new employees can be easily carried out in the admin area.
