Bots and Gender

In my observations, humans use gender and stereotyping as tools to organize a very complex world so they can make sense of it. Gender is the first line of organization for people. That’s why it drives everyone crazy when they can’t determine the gender of a person. (aka, the “Pat” sketches on Saturday Night Live)

That being said, “gendering” is a human construct. Humans are actually born along a continuum, and despite that, our reluctance to stray from our familiar methods of organizing make it difficult to change the system. That’s why most people give up on trying to force non-gender specific pronouns on the general population. It’s just to big a job to get a significant number of people to actually use the new system. That’s not to say that there couldn’t be a “Tipping Point” in our future. (Thank you Malcom Gladwell) It’s just going to take a specific set of conditions to get to that point.

TLDR summary: I think we’ll be stuck with gendering of AI because that’s the system humans are used to, at least for now.
