The comedic benefits of tests
Ha Ha Ha! :D
Tests can be found everywhere and in everything: from the Big Bang Theory, where Sheldon and Leonard test the lengths at which Howard is willing to talk about his trip to space, to the theory of the Big Bang, where tests of black holes and events occurring in space are developed daily. There is a plethora of scenarios in which tests can be used. It’s quite shocking, really!
I hadn’t noticed the potential for tests until I took PSYC-406 this semester. As though a fog had lifted itself from in front of my eyes, I suddenly saw tests everywhere. Many were used for the purposes of discovering something new, or analysing a particular construct. For instance, new tests have been developed to test the genotypes and phenotypes of children, and this, to assess their potential in a particular sport. Indeed, such new tests and breakthroughs occur on a daily basis.
What startled me most, however, was that occasionally I found tests, in all their accomplishments, to have a comedic benefit as well. Indeed, certain tests were designed for the purposes of humour. For example, in the hit sitcom Friends, Joey and Ross test the limits of human exhaustion by throwing a ball back and forth for over 10 hours straight. In the United States, certain homeowners tested Squirrel dexterity and nimbleness through a series the twists and turns of an obstacle course designed for voluntary squirrels to find food (aka Ninja training for squirrels). Finally, on an Australian radio and television show, Hamish and Andy test the limit capacity of a hovercraft in New Zealand (as well as how reckless one can be with purchases on a road trip). While not all of these tests are high in reliability and validity, there is comfort in knowing that tests not only have an educational purpose, but they also have a therapeutic and even comedic purpose as well. Through comedic skits and scenes, tests can help elevate a person’s mood and fill their day with positivity!
