There’s definitely still a steep learning curve, but a lot of stuff has improved since then and it’s generally much easier to get started and to become proficient in developing for Android. You’ll still find yourself scratching your head from time to time, but I guess that’s one of the downsides of developing for a platform that runs on tens of thousands of devices.

As for the future of Android development, I think it’s hard to say. With Google embracing Kotlin as a native development language, I think it’d be wise to learn it. I also think it’s a good idea to try out developing for some of the small and upcoming versions of Android, i.e. Android Wear, Android Auto, Android TV and Android Things.
