Not to armchair diagnose, but this article seems to describe the casual alcoholism of young people in New York. The author states 1–2 drinks per day in New York is normal, which it may be for some people, and that is basically the CDC’s definition of “moderate” drinking anyway. Then, however, he goes on to describe drinking situations where his friends drink to the level of being intolerable to a sober person. So… that implies more than one or two drinks on a regular enough basis that his social interaction with this particular group nearly ceases.
And also $1000 on drinks is definitely a lot, but whatever, you can’t take it with you, live your life, etc.
