The first year of a child’s life can be so challenging to a parent’s physical and mental health. When I became a mom 15 years ago, I didn’t have much trouble losing my pregnancy weight. The early days were such a whirlwind. Then the tedium of sleepless nights set in, the growing dread of realizing just how vulnerable young ones can be to injury and illness, etc. By the time my daughter’s first birthday rolled around, I weighed more than I did the day she was born!
Looking back at those early days, the one thing I would change is this: I would have found sitters I could trust to have an evening or weekend off periodically. At the time, I was living 2,000 miles away from my family, so this task seemed impossible then.
