Learn More About the Communities Techtonica Serves

Techtonica offers free coding workshops to low-income women and non-binary adults, and is expanding to free, full-time tech training (mostly software engineering). The full-time program will offer living and childcare stipends, followed by job placement at sponsoring companies that are ready to support more diverse teams. Learn more here.

Many people have wondered about the demographics of our students, so here’s a bit we know from our workshop follow-up surveys.

Over 50 students have attended our workshops so far, and 5 of our students’ children have been signed up for childcare at these workshops. Also, 75% are not employed full-time, and 97.8% want to join more classes.

Here is some visual data around gender identity, ethnicity/race, and location:

Gender identity: 86% Woman, 9.3% Non-binary/Genderqueer, 2.3% Trans Queer, 2.3% Other
Ethnicity/Race: 21.1% Asian, 23.7% Black, 2.6% East Asian, 2.6% Hispanic, 7.9% LatinX, 5.3% Native American/Alaskan Native/First Nations, 2.6% Pacific Islander, 7.9% Southeast Asian, 26.3% White

That’s 71% People of Color! Here’s what we ask to show further breakdown:

Cities students live in: Berkeley, Fremont, Oakland, San Francisco, South San Francisco
San Francisco neighborhoods students live in: Mission, Tenderloin, Richmond, Western Addition, SOMA, Lower Nob Hill, Sunset, Polk Gulch, Hayes Valley

As you can see, working with local organizations to organize and advertise our workshops has resulted in quite a diverse set of students. We ❤️ our students!
