THERE HAS TO BE A PONY IN HERE SOMEWHERE. (A Thanksgiving Wish)

Finding the good in the shit pile of life.

You might have heard the popular parable about the two young boys. One optimist, one pessimist. I love this story.

Both boys were left alone in a room with a big pile of horse poo in the middle of the floor.

It was a scientific experiment.

They were both given shovels.

The scientists left the room and when they came back a few hours later they noticed something amazing.

One little boy had a scowl on his face and was sitting angrily with his back against a wall in the corner of the room. His arms were folded across his chest with his shovel sitting on the floor next to him.

He yelled, ‘WHY did you leave us alone in here with all this shit?? It stinks in here. Its nasty! I want OUT of here … NOW!!”

The other little boy was the opposite. He was smiling wide engrossed by shoveling fast into the shit pile! We looked up happily and said:

‘With all this shit in here… there’s bound to be a pony SOMEWHERE!!’

So, the moral is:

There’s bound to be some good within the shitty things in life, if you look for it. Or, you can bemoan the fact that you are sitting in shit.

The same goes for our lives. I’ve always believed in turning your shitty stuff into something — worthwhile.

I believe you can turn a pile of shit into beauty or art.

Isn’t that what we writers try to do?
Isn’t that what visual artists and creative people of all types have attempted to do throughout history?

With my memoir in progress and all of the books I have published, and even when I write a story on medium I believe this.

Sometimes we use the shit that happens to us in life, even our neurosis, for a good purpose.

I think it’s to our benefit to find the pony!

What do you do with your shit?

I hope you can some how turn the:

trauma into triumph

mess into messages

horrors into hope

darkness into light

shit into — beauty.
