WHAT THE ‘F’ IS THE PURPOSE OF WRITING?

So I’ve been writing every day since I made my commitment to my 365 BLOGS in 365 DAYS challenge at the beginning of this year.

The challenge was for myself, no one else. I mean isn’t everything we do in life really for ourselves, mainly?

Yes some say we write for others — to help them in some way — to relate and connect to them, and make a ‘difference’. Yes, the hope of writing of course is that we can connect with other humans, unless we want to sit on a mountain and write in our journals and never share our writings.

But I wonder what the TRUE reason is for why I still write every day — - and also is it worth it?

Some say writing is a muscle that we must exercise to strengthen.

Writing Is A Muscle

Writing is a muscle. Smaller than a hamstring and slightly bigger than a bicep, and it needs to be exercised to get stronger. Think of your words as reps, your paragraphs as sets, your pages as daily workouts. Think of your laptop as a machine like the one at the gym where you open and close your inner thighs in front of everyone, exposing both your insecurities and your genitals. Because that is what writing is all about.

COLIN NISSAN

Ok ok. I’ve been strengthening my writing muscle since publishing three books and writing a story a day ever since.

Honestly I’m not sure if that is a good enough answer to me.

I think we have to ask ourselves these questions.

  1. Do I like writing?
  2. Is it worth spilling our guts out into the world?
  3. Does it fulfill some deep inner need or call within?
  4. Does writing help ourselves or the world in any way?
  5. Does our writing feel productive and lead to growth of some kind?

Honestly, today I am still pondering these questions.

I am happy to say though that I am still fulfilling my ‘one story a day’ commitment and I am honoring myself by continuing it.

‘Even if we don’t totally understand something that’s ok’

says Eckart Tolle.

So I am admitting today that I don’t understand my writing at all.
