Recent Ban Affects the Medical World
In Yemen alone, 1.5 million children are malnourished and banned from entering the United States. Amongst a million famished kids, 360,000 are suffering from severe illnesses. According to the UNICEF, those numbers only account for the children in Yemen. Now imagine how many more kids must be suffering in the other six countries banned from entering the United States?
President Donald Trump’s executive order regarding immigration and the ban of refugees has placed several communities in danger due to the violent acts within the region and the lack of resources these countries endure. Every day many civilians are affected by the brutal rage that broke out between the U.S and the Middle East. The order established by Trump placed a strain on seven countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. The executive order of immigration caused adverse effects in the United States, the Middle East, and the medical field one of the most vital resource in the U.S.
The controversy is whether or not the banning was the right thing to do, considering the disadvantage to the medical field in the United State. Believe it or not, several doctors from the Middle East have contributed to the health development of communities in the United States. Foreign doctors are willing to work at low-profit clinics in the U.S, unlike native doctors who prefer working in high-end hospitals. The banning placed by Trump also delay medical research done by students who are in the States with a visa; many people who need medical attention in the U.S will not be able to receive it. Although many people will be hurt in this process, Trump can argue that the eradication of Islamic terrorism is needed to keep our country safe.
As a Biology major with an interest in the medical field, I know the importance of health care in developing countries. One of my goals after college is to be able to volunteer abroad in emergent nations. I was blessed to grow up in a middle class family with enough resources to keep me healthy; therefore, I would like to travel to a country where I can help the ones who need it the most. If I am able to travel out and help others, they should be allowed to enter the United States if they are willing to help our people in need of urgent care. As a citizen of the United States, I know that it is important to keep this country safe. Considering the terrorist attacks, some of which include 9/11 and the most recent in San Bernardino, it’s a fact not a speculation that the U.S has been targeted. But, I also know that not everyone’s sole purpose is to harm the country. There are many foreigners who have contributed to making the U.S a better place.
Due to the ban, many important contributors to the medical field were denied their stay in the U.S. Foreign doctors that are willing to work in small towns, veteran affairs, poor over populated neighborhoods were not able to assist their patients. According to the article from The New York Times Trump’s Travel Ban, Aimed at Terrorists, Has Blocked Doctors, there’re more than 15,000 doctors from Muslim countries that are banned from entering the United States. Donald G McNeil Jr, the writer of the article said, “Dr. Hooman Parsi, an oncologist so talented that he has an O-1 visa granted to individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement, was to start seeing patients on Wednesday. A federal judge in Seattle lifted the administration’s travel ban on Friday, and a federal appeals court has declined to restore it. Yet Dr. Parsi is still stuck in Iran, waiting for a delayed visa”(McNeil, 2017). Due to the ban, Dr. Parsi will not be able to attend the opening of a new clinic San Bernardino, California. I personally did not think it was fair to not let him enter the United States. Dr. Parsi was trying to give back to the United States by working at a new clinic where people with a low income can get assistance. In return, he was not allowed to enter the U.S and got detained in Iran even though he had the visa that is only given to talented people. If he was trying to help our country why can’t we let him in?
People who agree with the banning can say that prohibiting the entrance of Islamic states will protect our country. According to the article, “I Think Islam Hates Us” by the New York Times editorial board, “For them and most national security experts, containing terrorism meant focusing on individuals and groups that were intent on doing harm to America — namely Al Qaeda and groups like ISIS — while not turning all Muslims into the enemy”(The Editorial Board, 2017). For years former President Obama tried to prevent terrorism. Now Trump created this ban in hopes of putting an end to groups intended to harm the country. Many believe that the problem with this approach is that it will rage anti-Americans and backfire on the United States. Now the only thing left to do is see what Trump has in store for the country.
There’re many people who have been affected by the recent ban President Donald Trump established to avoid terrorist from entering the country. Through the process, many people who are both in the United States and in Muslim countries are suffering a loss. On the other hand, we have to ensure the safety of our country. I believe that not everyone is here to harm the country, but there has to be a system of protection to avoid terrorist acts from occurring. I would suggest to find a better system instead of granting the ban to all majority-Muslim countries, and my further research is sure to help me suggest an alternative solution.
