It involves exposing the skin to low-level light emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit specific wavelengths of light.

The LED Colours

Different colours of LED light have different therapeutic effects on the skin. The most commonly used colors in LED light therapy are:

  1. Red light (wavelength around 630–700nm): Red light stimulates collagen production, improves blood circulation, and promotes healing. It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. Additionally, red light therapy can help improve skin tone and texture.
  2. Blue light (wavelength around 405–470nm): Blue light has antimicrobial properties that target and destroy acne-causing bacteria. It is commonly used to treat acne and can help reduce inflammation and regulate oil production in the skin.
  3. Amber light (wavelength around 570–620nm): Amber light is often used to promote skin rejuvenation. It can help stimulate lymphatic flow, reduce redness and swelling, and improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
  4. Green light (wavelength around 520–570nm): Green light is known for its calming and soothing properties. It can help reduce redness, alleviate skin discoloration, and improve overall skin complexion.

What happens during an LED light therapy session?

During an LED light therapy session, the patient sits or lies down comfortably while a panel of LED lights is positioned close to their skin. The light penetrates the skin at various depths, depending on the color and wavelength used. The therapy session typically lasts for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Is LED light therapy safe?

LED light therapy is considered safe and painless, with minimal risk of side effects. It does not involve UV radiation and does not cause burns or damage to the skin. However, it may require multiple sessions to achieve optimal results, and individual responses can vary.
