But those items should be categorized as gifts or personal care, not grocery. It’s so easy to flog yourself for not reigning in the spending on foodstuffs, because it seems to be the one area where you can have more control (unlike fixed expenses like housing or loan payments). But for most people, the grocery budget encompasses all sorts of other needs. Having friends is a need. Activities with friends cost money. Even if it’s a hike in the woods, you still need to factor in transportation and food.
I’d say being generous with friends is akin to the donation and charity bucket. It’s a nice thing to be able to do nice things for others.
