Stop.
Let’s think about things for a second. By Xmas the UK will have been pulled through another general election and potentially give the Conservative Party a democratic mandate for their viscious onslaught against the working class. An onslaught that has seen as many as 170,000 individuals die while waiting on the administration of state benefits.
An onslaught that has seen our education system decimated and our National Health Service bargained out to US big pharma.
An onslaught which has played Russian Roulette with the Good Friday Agreement, and dirtied the sheets with the marginal DUP, while crucially leading to the breakdown of power sharing in the North of Ireland.
Their administration has been tarred with populist racism, sexual assault, discrimination, fake news, deregulation, bribary and scandal.
And that’s before even considering the Long Knives-esque attitude to Brexit.
This all happened while Britain was part of the EU. And this attack on the human rights of individuals living on these islands will continue, whether Scotland holds another Independence Referendum or not.
Yet, still we pin our hope’s on whatever flag is on our Passports. Better to pin our hopes on each other.
See, the world is changing. As the population grows, the techno capitalism that was once heralded as progress is leading to the decimation of our work force and the destruction of our environment. The methods of advertising and surveillance utilised by multi national companies transcend nation states and transcend borders. Nations themselves being constructs which seek to control wealth. Borders corall raw human potential.
Thus if we want things to change we have to reject the Nation State. It’s old hat. Dead. The whole notion rests on the belief that resources exist only for the advantage of those who inhabit a particular landmass. It perpetuates the myth that one is more deserving or legitimate than the other, based on proposed cultures or identities which are ever evolving anyway. So, if we want equality then our view of “collective” must evolve to shape the society in which we want to live.
So then how to vote in December? Democracy as we understand it is also an agent of this conundrum which seeks to divide and categorise power. It too fundamentally must evolve.
So whatever you vote, or if you vote at all, it’s only the first rung on a ladder. A finger in a dam. Change is coming whether we like it or not. It is the one certainty of life on Earth. If we want equality and dignity we cannot trust our leaders to shape it alone. It starts here. Now. With us.
