Success Mindset: How to Develop One as a Freelance Writer?

For some, freelance writing seems easy, but is it? The thing is, freelance writing can be easy or difficult at the same time. It all depends on the mindset, the way you approach this career.

Although seemingly a not-so-conventional and easy-breezy job, Freelance writing can get tedious at times, resulting in burnout and lack of motivation.

However, it can be lucrative and one of the most stable fields in the freelance market. But to grow and make your place, you need to have a ‘success mindset’, which I will talk about in this quick article.

Here are my four golden rules for cultivating a successful mindset for freelance writers.

Focus on Growth

It may seem a straightforward tip. However, many still lack this mindset. No matter if it is writing or any other job, you need to work with growth in mind — all the time.

This mindset will drive you to upgrade your skills, create a better portfolio, increase your rates, and make more efforts to find better clients.

Maybe, look for one more client or create an account on another freelancing platform and start sending proposals. Or start looking for jobs at a higher rate.

Whatever you do, being at the same point in a year’s time that you are today shouldn’t be on your agenda.

Know Your Value

The freelance writing market is quite saturated, which means writers are sometimes exploited. However, if you believe in your skills and ability to write killer content, you should know your value.

With freelance writing, it’s important to have a strong ‘personal brand’ because your name is what people remember.

What are you bringing to the table that other writers are not? How can you help your client grow? Knowing your value will ensure that you don’t settle for less than what you’re worth.

Set New Goals

SMART goals are really helpful when it comes to freelance writing because you can determine what will really matter for your career. By creating SMART goals, writing is no longer a random act, but a skill set honed over time.

SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. There are also other elements to consider, such as avoiding procrastination and eliminating negative thoughts, but those are beyond the scope of this article for now.

Far too often, we set ourselves up to fail because our goals aren’t well thought out right from the start.

Your goals should be:

  • Specific: You need to know exactly what you want to achieve your goals.
  • Measurable: If the goal isn’t measurable, then how can you gauge the progress? It’s important that every step you take leads towards achieving something tangible, like daily word count, earnings, your rate, number of clients, etc.
  • Achievable: Your goals should be reasonable and achievable. For instance, what should be your earnings by the end of the year? The average word count target for the day, or the number of clients you should have in the next few months.
  • Relevant: Your goals should also be relevant to you and your work. They must align with your growth strategy.
  • Time-bound: Create a time frame for your goals. For example, I’ll work 40 hours a week this month. Also, push yourself to write faster without sacrificing quality. If you’re writing 1000 words in 4 to 6 hours, content writing won’t make any financial sense. You can read more about how to write high-quality content in less time here on my other blog on Medium.

Provide Value

Value provision wins you clients because you’re actually facilitating their growth too. You’re not selling your skill but providing value through your writing.

Keep in mind that mutual growth is paramount to professional progress. Also, make sure you’re always open to constructive feedback.

Finally, take action. Start today rather than waiting for the ‘right moment’ — this is your right moment.
