Hi Naera,
Thank you for your comments, you gave me a good idea for my second publication. Initially, when you asked about the big players not in terms of collection but in use, I assumed that they would be the same. After all, why not? they collect the data, why not using this data themselves? It was surprising to find that even when companies such as Google and Facebook that have direct access to this type of data, they do not necessarily know how to apply the right analysis to it in order to produce relevant results. Something that was surprising to find during my research for the new publication was the lack of cases of big data usage for the wrong reasons. I am not so sure why, I imagined that I would find several articles from insurance companies misusing our data to calculate premiums or compromised data sold in the black market. I know a few examples of these cases. However, it is difficult to find information linking organisations to Big Data misuse. One that I found fascinating was the example from a LinkedIn database compromised years ago and recently found on www.leakedsource.com
If you access the site and enter your login details, username that you normally choose when registering new sites, your e-mail address, name, or IP address you might find that your data is not necessarily secure anymore. This is data that was originally collected from you in exchange for “free” services.
I am not entirely sure if Big Data misuse cases are deliberately hidden from Google searches or not to many people publish these cases online.
