By all means, let’s have that conversation. I think an interesting point is whether/how appropriation encourages this marginalization. I don’t see that it does, while you seem to take it for granted. As you described, the marginalization might cause the appropriation, but by itself that doesn’t make appropriation harmful. On the other hand, feedback loops are really common with social phenomena, so maybe I just don’t see it.

But really, I think that conversation requires that we find a way to talk about race without wearing our hearts on our sleeves; that applies to both liberals and conservatives. It probably requires an environment tailored to calming people down. Parties that introduce artificial diversity and mingling? Well-publicized formal debates? I don’t know what would work, and I don’t know how to stage an experiment to find out.
