But it’s hardly just about that. Podcasting is becoming a big business in its own right. Yes, it’s still nascent, but Spotify has been putting the pieces in place to make it less so. And Joe Rogan may be the last piece needed in that equation.

It's interesting to re-read this piece three years later.

It's interesting to re-read this piece three years later. In many ways, podcasting is still a tiny, nascent category. The most generous estimates put podcasting's total ad revenue at about 2.25 billion dollars per year (advertising revenue in traditional radio is about $28.5 billion). There are thousands of people starting…

look back and see the 2022/23 period as probably the moment where podcasts iterate…a mealy-mouthed way of saying “podcasts, but with a different technological underpinning”) but that we will look back and see the 2022/23 period as probably the moment where podcasts iterate away from the open-RSS audio download product of the past decade. So yes, in that sense, the old podcast is dying.

Is podcasting actually dying?

There's no evidence that "podcasts are iterating from the open-RSS audio download product of the past decade." New podcasts, existing podcasts, and popular podcasts: the majority all still run on good 'ol RSS. The whole beauty of the open-ecosystem, especially for podcast creators, is there is no single, centralized megacorp that "owns" podcasting. Apple has about 30%-40% share. Spotify has about 30-40% share.

Contrarian bootstrapper Ian Landsman

“Charge more!” “Use content marketing!” “Start with an ebook!” There’s a lot of folklore in the startup and bootstrapping community. Do they all stand up to scrutiny? This is my interview with long-time SaaS entrepreneur, Ian Landsman. This episode (from 2017) is still full of gems for self-funded SaaS startups. Here’s a teaser: Here’s the full episode: EP84 - Contrarian bootstrapper Ian Landsman "Charge more!" "Use content marketing!" "Start with an ebook!" Almost everything mentioned here could be managed by adding new fields to an RSS feed.

👏 Well said Matt!

👏 Well said Matt! Many of the features suggested in Michael's piece are already being explored as a part of the https://podcastindex.org/ project. But more importantly, Spotify seems particularly hungry to be the "centralized platform" for podcasting. They want discovery, consumption, and monetization can happen in the same place. That desire serves no one but Spotify and their shareholders. One centralized platform = bad for creators. (I discuss this in more detail here: https://justinjackson.ca/podcasts-and-capital).

How did this happen?

It’s been years since I’ve published anything on Medium. (Hi, it’s me, Justin Jackson). But (somehow) I’ve accrued nearly 6,000 followers here?! Since I stopped writing on Medium, I’ve been focused on building a startup called Transistor.fm (with my co-founder Jon Buda). It’s a podcast hosting and analytics platform. We started in early 2018 and built it from $0 in MRR, to over $550,000 in ARR today.

How much money does Joe Rogan make from his podcast?

When people hear that Joe Rogan is making $25 — $50 million a year from his podcast, they take notice. However, most folks forget that Joe started his podcast back in 2009. “The Joe Rogan Experience” was one of the first comedy podcasts, and he did it for years before…

I spent $30,000 to get product-market fit

Thousands of dollars were pouring into my account. And I was miserable. It was 10pm on a Friday night. I was sitting at my kitchen table with my laptop open. I was watching hundreds of Stripe payment notifications come through. A year previous, I’d launched a new subscription product called…
