Ah well, you can’t win them all. This story comes across as if it were written by a dockless scooter or bike company. I have nothing against those as they are an implementation of technology that makes much sense in cities where we mostly all live. I expect autonomous vehicles to be well represented on our road and streets in five years. The primary focus for that is long haul trucking.
But Waymo and others are racking up hundreds of thousands of miles in cities. It is always harder than it appears to the advocates but beyond a certain threshold that is simply a matter of time. We are at that threshold now.
As a contrarian piece this provides a look at the opposition to what we are being told to expect. That certainly doesn’t hurt. Realistically this would fall on the negative edge of thinking about autonomous vehicles. Usually you throw out the most extreme on each end and look at the middle for balanced view.
One problem here is ignoring that force behind both autonomous vehicles and drones is the same machine learning explosion in capabilities. We will have both types of autonomous transport and the drone component of urban transportation will tremendously reduce the ground traffic.
