It wouldn’t matter. Newspapers didn’t defeat themselves; they were defeated by the Balkanization of the news via desktop computers. As soon as you could layout a magazine or newspaper on a PC, magazines and newspapers grew in number and diversity. The Internet was just an extension of that Balkanization. Businesses wishing to advertise were drawn to publications that specialized in lifestyles that supported their products rather than general news outlets.

Perhaps, Reagan is to blame since he’s the one who wondered why he should have to pay for someone else’s intellectual curiosity.
