As the product of a full tripod switch (Consultant, Analytics, U.K. -> PM, Consumer Tech, US) I can reinforce that doing such a big jump required a lot of time investment into PM/Consumer projects before and during my MBA, as well as gravitating towards larger companies more able to take a risk.

from the outset I basically geared my entire MBA experience around a switch to PM, including the choice of school (Stanford) because of the available networking and roots into my chosen destination (Silicon Valley)
