Diary of iPhone to Android Conversion

7 years of iPhone. I was getting bored. Time for a change. I’ve itched the Android itch. My hardware is the Samsung S8. This is a regular diary charting the transition.

Day 1

OH MY F***** GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Why are there so many screens? Three buttons WHY? They aren’t even real buttons FFS! Where’s my favourite Twitter app? Will my friends still speak to me?

WILL THE SHOP TAKE IT BACK?!?

Day 2

Awaking from a deep sleep, I glanced at my wife, still asleep. Reach for phone. After I shudder at the fact it’s a Samsung, I proceed.

Unlock. Unlock. Unlock.

OH FFS JUST UNLOCK.

What Samsung genius thought it was a good idea to put a minuscule fingerprint scanner on the back, right beside the lens!? I want answers.

Oh, what’s that pretty thing? A widget? Interesting…

Day 3

Why won’t you frigging die battery? Die I tell thee!

Boy that’s a real pretty screen you got there Missy.

HELP GOOGLE IS STALKING ME EVEN MORE NOW!

Man, this is a serious rollercoaster.

Day 4

Went to a wedding reception last night. Not happy with the camera, it’s too sharp, makes me look really old.

Oh the humanity.

Day 5

On my way to catch the train this morning, my phone interrupted my walk to tell me my train was late. Cheeky bastard.

Also, what the hell is this ‘App Edge’ thing? Makes it far too easy to access more apps to waste my life on.

64 GB of built in memory as standard? Thanks Samsung. Now, I can take even more dumb selfies and not worry about storage hassle. How dare you.

I can hardly bear this.

Day 6

I’m travelling to London on biznas today…

So far the built-in Google travel stuff has been really bloody helpful. Real praise actual praise. In-fact, six days in and I’m falling in love with my Samsung/Android experience.

It’s far more flexible than iOS. I’ve got features and apps running exactly how I want. On the hardware front, the camera is incredible. The battery, wowsers! The system shuts things down when you aren’t using them to save power. 64 gig of storage as standard with ability to add a micro SD? Edge-to-edge screen. So pretty.

I work from a Mac and use an iPad. Everything still works as I’m baked-in to Google, not Apple software. Outside of email, cloud storage, calendar etc, my music is on Spotify and my entertainment via Netflix and Amazon Prime. I’ll never stop using a Mac, but the fact is, it doesn’t matter, when you live a cloud-based life, hardware shouldn’t really be an issue.

Yes, the transition is painful at first, but after some serious freak-outs earlier on, I’m now delighted I’ve made the switch.

Apple really need to smash it with the iPhone 8, as tech and innovation wise, they’re losing out to Samsung big time. The S8 feels truly innovative and built for the times we live in, and beyond.

DIARY ENDS!
