For Journalism’s Sake

I’ve decided that I need to refrain from posting news-related messages on my social media platforms (mainly Facebook but I’m also going to try to curb it on Twitter). I’m too thoroughly disgusted to be anything but offensive at this point so I need to step away from it. I’m posting a version of this message about the Committee to Protect Journalists and Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award on the Golden Globes. After that I will try to focus on goofy things that don’t involve the prospect of a nuclear winter.

I am not trying to be an alarmist but we must keep in mind that historically intellectuals and artists have been the first to be targeted by groups with fascist tendencies. Trump openly threatened to use his power, if elected, to broaden libel laws so that journalists can be sued easier. The Republican party has traditionally campaigned for LESS government interference, but Trump asked for MORE litigious bureaucracy and he will push for it. There is no reason to believe he won’t start suing news outlets and independent small press outfits left and right in order to intimidate them and keep them from releasing stories.

Meryl Streep used her time on stage wisely, in my opinion. Most of the media professionals I know are independent small business owners and if they were taken to court over a frivolous libel suit, they could be bankrupted.

Of course there are other worthy causes out there, equally if not more important. That’s beside the point though, because charity does not have to be directed in only one direction — it’s good to donate to causes you believe in if you can swing it financially. Most working class people in the media can’t.

Meryl Streep said it best in her words of warning:

“…Our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our Constitution so I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood foreign press and all of us in our community to join us in supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists, and we’re going to need us going forward and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”
