Some video games do this on purpose. The defeated player then gets rescued, spared, revived, or allowed to retreat, and the game continues. The early humiliation motivates the player to get back at the end boss later on, thus priming them for the long grind ahead.

Notable examples include Mega Man X, Chrono Trigger, and multiple entries in the Final Fantasy series.
