The problem, I think, is that Third Spaces have always been completely intertwined with alcohol, because Third Spaces (those social outlets not tied to family or work) were usually at least a little transgressive. I‘m not sure it’s even possible to go back through history and find a time where non-related adults did not socialize through alcohol or whatever other intoxicating substances their cultures allowed.

I don’t mean to suggest women don’t have their own challenges in this regard, quite the opposite, but strip those problems away and we’re still all products of a culture (no matter which culture we’re even talking about!) that leaves us all massively ill-equipped to deal with adult relationships while sober.
