Since the birth of humankind, the cornerstone of all humanity has been society, and one imperative facet that most societies have always had in common is their necessity for artforms; especially music. Music has always had a place among all human groups in their daily lives and has always served many functions. Music serves first and foremost as a form of expression. The styles of music forms convey an abstract innervation, perhaps of a particular atmosphere, and they can also serve to evoke many emotions and states of mind. Song lyrics especially can be a great way to get messages across in a more effective and memorable fashion than simply speaking. Therefore, not only is music an incredibly vital aspect of human society but due to the powerful, expressive capability of music, it has often been used to critique and expose society itself!

In the 1940s and 1950s, modern jazz styles like bebop and hard bop acted as expressionist forms whose complex and intricate musical structures and lines perhaps challenged the audience to listen to and interpret music in an original new way outside of the more mundane styles which were popular within western society at the time.
