‘Baby Driver’ Is a Flat-Noted Musical
Cassam Looch

You’re right about the villain of the piece and while I agree with other things you’ve noted, I’m not convinced it’s a ‘stumbler’.

While watching the film I couldn’t help but think of Wright’s Hot Fuzz commentary with Tarantino and how this film was clearly a homage to car heist films — but also to True Romance. And, in this vein, it might be this generation’s version of that film, as well as being a box-office hit AND a cult fav.

I thought the driving scenes at the start were exciting and the music-making was fun and I’ve enjoyed films that were ‘carried’ with less.

I think I’d most like to see Wright’s next film be more of-the-tracks, less of a genre piece.
