Crypto Month in Review — November 2018

Crypto moves way too fast for me to keep up, so I aggregate each day’s biggest headline and publish the list at the end of the month. Below is my list for November. My main holdings are ETH and NANO, but I try to make these lists as unbiased as possible.

Market cap movement throughout November — mostly down, with market caps of most coins at or below early 2017 levels.

11/1 — BlackRock CEO Larry Fink says the asset manager won’t offer a crypto ETF until the industry is “legitimate”.
11/2 — CryptoKitties developer Dapper Labs receives $15 million in round 2 financing from investors such as Venrock, Google Venture, and Samsung.
11/3 — Andreas Antonopolous reveals that bit.ly has blocked nearly 200 Bitcoin related links in his books.
11/4 — Tensions heighten in the Bitcoin Cash hard fork debate as Craig Steven Wright doubles down on his support of the Satoshi Vision upgrade.
11/5 — Even after an earnings report that described sales due to crypto mining as “negligible”, AMD partners with 7 different companies to produce 8 different cryptocurrency mining rigs.
11/6 — Crypto wallet provider blockchain.com announces support for Stellar and a record-setting airdrop of $125 million worth of XLM to its users.
11/7 — Early Bitcoin adopters Gavin Newsom and Jared Polis are elected governor of California and Colorado, respectively.
11/8 — Trading for Basic Attention Token goes live on Coinbase, the 7th offering and 2nd ERC-20 token on the exchange.
11/9 — Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt says that Ethereum is an underrated crypto project with big potential.
11/10 — Tron breaks Ethereum’s record for number of daily transactions with 1.367 million tx
11/11 — BItmain files a “John Doe” lawsuit against the hacker who stole over $5 million in cryptocurrency from their Binance account in April.
11/12 — BitMex CEO Arthur Hayes states that the exchange does not trade against its customers after a Medium article accusing them of market manipulation and “weaponized” server issues gains traction.
11/13 — Cardano Foundation chairman Michael Parsons resigns after Cardano CEO Charles Hoskinson expresses his frustration at the lack of progress the foundation has made.
11/14 — 8 people are arrested in Tokyo in connection with a cryptocurrency-based pyramid scheme that collected over $68 million.
11/15 — Bitcoin Cash hard forks, with the Jihan Wu and Roger Ver backed Bitcoin Cash ABC taking a slight hash lead over the Craig Wright backed Bitcoin Cash Satoshi Vision.
11/16 — Nvidia’s stock price falls 20% after posting a second straight quarter of missed profit goals due to lack of cryptocurrency mining interest.
11/17 — West Virginia reports a successful first instance of remote blockchain voting in the 2018 midterm election, with 144 overseas military personnel in 24 countries casting their ballots on a blockchain based app called Voatz.
11/18 — Kraken opens trading for Bitcoin Cash SV, but calls it “an extremely high risk” investment
11/19 — The price of Bitcoin falls below $5000 for the first time since October 2017.
11/20 — The highly anticipated Bakkt Bitcoin futures exchange is delayed until January 24th, 2019.
11/21 — Giga Watt, the 5th largest mining company by hash rate and active since 2012, files for bankruptcy.
11/22 — Norway withdraws electric power subsidies from Bitcoin mining farms operating in the country.
11/23 — A study by Bitmex shows that 12 ICOs who raised more than $50 million have still not launched a token.
11/24 — The battle for Bitcoin Cash hash power ends, with Bitcoin Cash SV relinquishing the name to form its own Satoshi Vision cryptocurrency.
11/25 — In a large market selloff, Bitcoin falls below $4000, and EOS overtakes Bitcoin Cash as the #4 cryptocurrency for the first time.
11/26 — Hardware wallet Ledger opens a New York City office to develop its institutional custody product, Ledger Vault.
11/27 — Nasdaq partners with investment firm VanEck to develop digital asset products. Nasdaq also states that they plan to launch a Bitcoin futures contract as early as Q1 2019.
11/28 — Mike Novogratz’s investment fund Digital Galaxy reports $136 million in losses so far in 2018.
11/29 — The SEC charges Floyd Mayweather and DJ Khaled for failing to disclose payments they received for promoting ICOs, and fines them $600k and $150k, respectively.
11/30 — Bitmain releases the “Bitmain Crypto Index”, a fund which tracks Bitcoin and the next 15 most valuable cryptocurrencies.
