Millennials: The Greatest Generation Ever
Book Recommendation: Disrupt You by Jay Samit
The title of this article is not going to be too well received- heck, most people will probably even laugh to themselves when they read it. But let’s think about the reasons why this is actually going to happen. We were raised in a time when the internet was coming to fruition; a time when success is determined by your ability to predict; a time when possibilities to be successful are indeed limitless. Millennials question normalcy unlike any generation in the history of the world. Our parents supported us and thought that going to school was a necessity, suggesting that success was predicated on the school you chose rather than chasing your dreams. The tide has shifted and school, unfortunately, has not evolved with society. Our current education system, in the words of Seth Godin, is “an artifact of the industrial age. Industrialists needed compliant workers so they created a compliant system”. Programming children with the mindset that success was about following rules, being another cog in the wheel, and complying to given commands.
Millennials aren’t lazy or entitled, we just aren’t afraid to ask a simple question- “why?”. This is not a ploy to get out of work, it’s the very reason we will become the most successful generation in history. You see, we would rather do purposeful work than settle for a meaningless career. The thought of doing something I hate for the rest of my life (and still possibly failing) rather than chasing my dreams (and potentially being ridiculously successful) scares the shit out of me. Myself, like many other millennials, strive to make an impact in the lives of those around us and we cannot do that in the workplace system that exists today. Instead of looking forward to more vacation time once we’ve hit the 5-year mark with a company, we strive to create a life we don’t need a vacation from.
Our time is now to ascend to greatness, Millennials. Let’s change the global landscape and create a thriving world for generations to come. In order to do this, however, we must first change some habits.
Stop Watching Netflix
This is certainly a problem. Are we unmotivated or just lazy? Laziness is how most people describe this situation, but the true answer is that most simply aren’t motivated. Get your head out of your ass, stop insisting on beginning tomorrow, and start NOW. Your great idea may change the world, but without taking action it will only ever be an idea. I totally understand how hard it is to lose your “what-if”; that place in your mind that you go when you’re at work and fantasize about what life would be like if you could “just do this”. This is an escapism and a damn shame to let happen. Once you put this idea into action three things will happen- it will work or it will not. The third thing is that you will have had a taste of what it is like to attempt something you’re passionate about and the thought of doing anything else will make you sick.
Work/Life Balance… What?
Individuals who say they are looking for work/life balance are wantrepreneurs. Their idea of success is as convoluted as their idea of their talents. These are your perennial underachievers with the commitment level to match. Do not strive for work/life balance; simply create a career that IS your life (I’ll explain this a little more so my point isn’t misconstrued). We all need time with our family and friends, I understand that and I am not arguing against it. In fact, more time with family and friends is necessary to success. But instead of saying you can’t participate in a certain function because you have to go to work, how about getting to say you can’t make it because you get to go to work? This may be hard to comprehend, but once you discover what you could possibly love more than spending time with your friends and family you will have found your calling.
Achieving Through Dreaming
Your biggest asset is your imagination. Continually dream of what you are going to accomplish and then pursue this dream with courage, commitment, and conviction. Whatever dream you have, make it bigger, scarier, and more exhilarating. Nothing beats the adrenaline rush of finally being on your way to doing what others said was impossible. We’ve all been told to ignore the negativity; I say listen to it and let it fuel that fire inside. This is your life, your story, YourJourney- Live it.
I’ll leave you with a quote from one of my idols, Gary Vaynerchuk.
“There will be people in life who mentally block you from going after what you want. Look those people in the fucking face and tell them your truths… it’s on them to judge you.”
