Outsource without making dev team upset

My friend is running a large tech team 25 people and growing fast. He needs to scale faster and his board is pushing for him to do some outsourcing to an offshore team. He’s worried this could cause his team to freak out.

I’m thinking you can turn offshoring from something scary into a benefit. Ask for volunteers who want to lead a small offshore team. Ideally these are people who don’t currently have any direct reports. Assign them 1–2 “helpers” each. That’s it. Don’t micromanage or get involved in the day-to-day. Let them decide what to assign their team and how/when to communicate.

In theory those developers will be more productive but it will take practice. After a few months you should expect those developers to take on more challenging assignments or be getting stuff done faster.
