Attack of the Clones: Music Festivals and the Death of Intimacy

As major American music festivals continue to put out cookie-cutter, predictable lineups, some early adopter music fans are being pushed away in favor of smaller festivals. And you can bet on further lineup consolidation across major festivals, as Live Nation continues to take control of festivals with their recent acquisition of Bonnaroo.

Each year, it feels as though the same lineups are appearing across the major festivals. So I decided to dig in a bit and see if it was true.

I examined the headlining artists of Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Lollapalooza over the past nine years. The data below represents how many headlining artists (the first 15 listed on the bill) played at least two of the three festivals.
