Why Human Music Curation is So Important

Human curation has become increasingly important in this age of unlimited access to music — and, unfortunately, increasingly ignored. Still, there’s reason to hope: Beats Music recently bucked the algorithmic trend by branding itself as a music streaming service that emphasizes human curation. The company (founded by industry heads Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine) was acquired by Apple last year, and many music business executives questioned why Apple would target a streaming service that hasn’t established a solid customer base compared to its competitors.

Now, with the recent news that legendary radio DJ Zane Lowe left BBC Radio 1 to join Apple, the company’s plan to humanize the modern streaming experience seems to be shaping up. But what does this recent news actually tell us about where the future of music consumption is headed?
