FDA’s Cybersecurity Authority in 2023

Today the FDA has issued a new final guidance on the Refuse to Accept (RTA) policy relating to cybersecurity in medical devices, specifically for “Cyber Devices” as defined in the newly-amended FD&C Act (Section 524B). …

MedCrypt Closes Series A Funding

I’m excited to announce that MedCrypt has raised $5.3M in Series A funding led by Section 32, with participation from Eniac Ventures and Y Combinator. Eric, Brett, and I started MedCrypt in 2016 to give healthcare technology companies access to cybersecurity features in a few lines of code. When we…

Time Warner Cable is Not Neutral Toward CDN Traffic

I’m a Time Warner Cable (TWC) cable internet subscriber. I pay ~$100 a month for whatever their fastest internet speed option is in my area. My Eero wifi router will regularly report speeds as high as 130 Mbps down and 30 Mbps up, which would be great. However, I have…

We’re Exiting The Trough of Bitcoin Dissilluisonment

Here’s a crappy image showing the history of bitcoin valuation superimposed against the classic “Hype Cycle” graph. (Sorry; I’m not a Photoshop guy.) Sure, there is a lot of scaling involved. But it looks like we may finally be on the slope of bitcoin enlightenment, and on our way to bitcoin productivity. Also, a totally unscientific analysis of the graph above suggests a short-term price of $600 for bitcoin.

The $1,531.90 Wharton MBA

A good friend of mine runs a small engineering firm. As a “technical person”, he’s interested in improving his knowledge of business fundamentals in hopes of growing his business. Let’s call this guy Phil. Knowing that I’m a graduate of Wharton’s MBA program, Phil asked me for advice about pursing…

Five Graphs Showing $TSLA Has Nowhere To Go But Up

Why I’m betting on Tesla as the future of the automotive industry — The other day I was speaking to @gkurtzman about Teslas. He told me he had recently driven one, and it was “like driving your Mac.” There aren’t too many ways to make a car sound more appealing to me. But it made me think about how Teslas are in many…

Results of a Four Month StockTwits Experiment

I’m a novice stock investor. My most in-depth analysis goes something like “I ordered twice as much stuff from Amazon this month. Let’s buy more $AMZN.”. But as a physicist, I love numbers, and StockTwits provides lots of them. StockTwits is a social network that lets individual investors discuss stocks…

I Hope My Kid Fails

Or ‘The Failure Mitigation Framework’ — I have an 18 month old son, Holden. When I think about what I want for his future, I don’t just think about his soccer trophies, straight-A’s, or his acceptance to Princeton. I think about all of the times he’s going to fail, and how much stronger a person that’s…

Please, Make Bitcoin Illegal

…and I’ll keep buying it. — Every time a country makes Bitcoin illegal, I buy more. If a national government takes the time to evaluate a new technology, and then out-right ban it, that technology must be pretty huge. Bitcoin is a threat to the Ponzi schemes that are most currencies. Why would China embrace a currency it can’t manipulate the value of? Bitcoin is a really promising protocol. Those countries that reject it out of fear are only making the success of those countries that embrace it that much more likely.
