BSMdotCo Launches AerialSpaces™: Education Broadcast Software
A designed focused tool for delivering curriculum virtually is now available for educators and conference speaker beta testers.

BSMdotCo (formerly BlackStarMedia) launched in July 2014 with a series of experiments that asked: How to create accessible and relevant educational resources for entrepreneurs and technologists of color? Because there were several educational spaces where curriculum and instructors were not representative of the learners themselves, we set out to find a viable business model that would solve that problem.

During those experiments, we built a video based learning platform utilizing Google Hangouts that captured educational content from brilliant creators of color.
Since much of the curriculum we developed was delivered virtually, we became immersed in the landscape of commercially available tools for creating online learning environments.

Disappointed with what we found, we began to use our design expertise and knowledge of existing open source technologies and libraries to build custom educational social broadcast environments.
We hosted a series of virtual conferences with the prototype we developed in March of 2015.

Our customers were amazed.
The real problem we were meant to solve was validated. Although there was a huge need for the education we were delivering.
We also discovered there was a greater need for simple tools that allowed other educators to design rich learning experiences virtually.
Together with intentional design thinking patterns, we were able to solve important remote education delivery problems related to ability accessibility, diversity in curriculum and inclusive content design.

Taking this new information back to the drawing board, we developed in-browser software (SaaS) that allows educators and speakers to build and design their own engaging virtual learning environments in seconds using live video, dual stream screen sharing, and an “any-code drop-in widget” that integrates with a variety of educational resources.
In October 2015, our initial prototype was used as the underlying technology behind virtual conferences and webinar initiatives that reached global audiences of thousands. In December 2015, we released an alpha version of our application, AerialSpaces™, that was used for a non-profit speaker series.
This summer, we’re launching a special beta release of AerialSpaces™ — specifically for educators and conference speakers. Our first enterprise customers are Github (and the White House ConnectHome initiative) as well as the University of Illinois’ Career Services Center.
Several technology conferences will be making the tool available to its speakers and we are also inviting an additional 100 educators to join our beta.
Our core belief at BSMdotCo is that education should be accessible, engaging and inclusive. The software we’re building allows us to provide an incredibly powerful tool suite to others who share this belief.
