Create to Create

I’m kind of a loner and like exploring on my own. I’m okay with that. Almost every night I take my camera or iPhone and head to the beach or to the docks or to the busy streets and just goof around with long exposures, time lapses, light trails, light paintings. What would happen if? What if I put the camera upside down and put a polarize filter on the lens and shot a long exposure of the water….What’s funny is I delete a lot of the footage once the experiment is done and I rarely remember what works and what doesn’t. I just learn for the sheer enjoyment and mental exercise of stretching my mind. Training.

I’m a lifelong learner of things that inspire me. I look at everything and say, what if I?….or if I watch a tutorial on something in Photoshop or design related, I am always envisioning how I could use it for something completely different. Which fyi, is what Photoshop and design is all about. The folks at Adobe know that most of the tools they introduce never get used as intended and they have the most fun seeing what creatives will do with their products in ways they never thought of. Happy accidents. I think this is the joy of life.

Be curious. Learn by doing. Push the limits of what you are capable of.

“Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is.” -Isaac Asimov

I learn a lot from all types of people and websites online and in classes on Lynda or tutorials on YouTube and Skillshare and I am never satisfied that I know enough. The most talented and gifted people in the world, never stop learning. They are always feeding their mind and practicing their skills to stay current and relevant. If you want to be great and make a dent in the universe, it is up to you to keep learning and keep applying the knowledge to all parts of your life and business. But to be truly great, you must also learn about what makes you, you. Self-education.

Self-education is moving me forward because I am not questioning why I am always practicing and exploring and trying to find my voice and style. I just keep making things and noticing the patterns. Mostly what do I like to do and what do I want to avoid doing more of. This can only happen with self-awareness and self-mastery. The education I needed the most of and what I have been doubling down on.

Self-education can be learning on your own terms, but learning about your self is where the magic happens. It has taken me most of my life to figure this out, but if you are beating yourself up because you are not happy with where you are in life or think you are passion-less or don’t have a calling, learn about your self. It’s scary and awkward and feels a bit selfish and narcissistic, but once you get a glimpse of the value of self-education, go deeper.

Self-education is free (kind of) and a pretty good start to finding happiness. It’s working for me. I’m still at kindergarten level in comparison to my tech nerdery interests, but, wow is it worth the effort to listen and learn what makes me, me.
