5 Things That Surfing Has Taught Me About Writing

Just finished your recent book Rao, and I thank you for writing it. Your fresh perspective hit a chord with me. I find myself connecting the metaphor of learning to surf to so many aspects of life.

Even the thoughts we allow in our mind can be seen like waves. If we fall off of a thought string, we can choose to give up and float to shore, or swim back out and try to think through the problem again.

Even thoughts as simple as “I should do the dishes” can be seen as waves to be surfed. If you get distracted by a phone call, you have fallen off of the mind’s surf board. You can choose to get back on the board, and pull your mind back to the thought of doing the dishes, and repeating this process until you finally get the dishes done. One plate at a time or all at once doesn’t matter, so long as the dishes get cleaned!

Each time you get back on the board and surf a thought string, you are strengthening your ability to focus on a single task. One might even connect this idea to mindfulness.

Again, your book was a great read, thank you for writing it.
