Gluten Sensitivity and Dairy Sensitivity

Everyone has probably heard by now how gluten and dairy are harmful to your health. So what is the real truth behind these bold statements. I have been practicing for almost 10 years now and I have been helping patients with nutrition and weight loss with amazing results. Food allergies have been a major problem for many of my patients. Patients can experience a laundry list of symptoms from food allergies. Here is a short list of symptoms:

  • weight gain
  • gas/bloating/diarrhea
  • joint pain
  • fatigue
  • thyroid issues
  • behavior issues
  • ADD/ADHD
  • headaches/migraines
  • eczema/psoriasis
  • sinus problems/allergies

The only way to tell what you are allergic to is by testing. We perform the IgG Food Intolerance Test. A small sample of blood is taken or a finger prick is performed and sent to the lab. They test for over 90 different common foods to find out if your body is creating antibodies to those foods. The test will come back and tell us if there is a mild, moderate or severe response. The treatment is very simple, avoid the positive foods on the test. Food allergies can change from 3–6 months where the food you were allergic to is no longer found to be positive on the next test. A food reintroduction can also be done to see if after 3–6 months of avoiding the food will result in a reaction. A story I like to tell is about a 3 year old patient of mine. He was diagnosed by his primary care doctor with Sensory Processing Disorder, eczema, Irritable bowel and hyperactivity. He had blood in his stools, behavior issues, skin rashes and a learning disorder. He would run around the office and did not sleep very well. His mother was desperate for answers when she was introduced to me by another doctor. I recommending a Food Intolerance test based on his current diet, which was bread and chicken fingers and by his symptoms. The results where very clear stating he had a severe allergy to all bread, all dairy and eggs. We brainstormed together to figure out what we can feed her 3 year old with out a major meltdown. One month later I get a phone call telling me how his rash is completely gone, he has been sleeping through the night and the blood in his stools are gone. The best news was when she told me her mother came in town to visit and asked where her grandson was because the child she saw was a completely different child. He was calm and responsive and a complete 180 from the grandson she knew.

So to answer the question is gluten and dairy harmful to your health?. It could be! The only way to know for sure is to have an IgG food intolerance test performed to find out what foods you may be sensitive to. It could even be the healthy choices of chicken and broccoli.
