The nice think about Thinkpads is that they are designed to be upgraded by the user and even have instructions how to do this in the manual. Also, older Thinkpads are very useable — I have a T400 and a X200 as day-to-day laptops left on in the house. Only Core2Duo CPUs but once you use an SSD they feel as fast as most modern, consumer-grade laptops because they used decent CPUs and also have a flash disk cache in them (a hidden feature!).
