Why the Future is About Leveraging Freelancers

For this to work for the freelancers as well as the employers, several things must happen which aren’t currently happening:
- They must have portable, affordable healthcare coverage, independent of their employers, but of the same quality. (I don’t mean Obamacare with its skyrocketing costs and plummeting quality of care.)
- They must have portable retirement plans, like 401k.
- Their pay from those they work for must be high enough to cover the cost of these items, plus the overhead cost of being independent.
- Regulations for employment must be adjusted to recognize that these people are independent businesses. That includes rules of taxation.
- They need support services to help them operate independently in a way that assures their well-being yet serves those they work for. I don’t mean labor unions — more like coaching support circles.
If these things don’t happen, freelancers will just get burned out and won’t be able to take care of themselves and their families. That doesn’t serve the companies that want to hire them.
