Tools aren’t inherently good or evil

My favorite example of technology is a knife, which can be used to kill, to cut food, or even to remove cancer. There’s no morality in a kitchen knife — it isn’t inherently good or evil. Makers, such as designers, engineers and business folks, combine their skills to create and sell knives to consumers, such as chefs and cooks. I expect that many Makers envision consumers happily using knives to cut their food and enjoy a meal. They realize that the knife can fail and cut by accident, so they include a sheath for safety. They don’t imagine a knife being used to kill, but they’re aware that could happen. Ultimately, knifes and other tools aren’t inherently good or evil — it’s how we use them that determines their morality.
