Automate cleaning your desktop on OSX

If you’re anything like me your desktop gets randomized and chaotic everyday.

With the new Stacks feature, Apple made an attempt to solve this—however it becomes a pain to sort through the stack to grab the files you’re currently working on.

I’ve been using an Automator function that I built that grabs all the files on my desktop and throws them in an inbox.

How to keep your desktop clean

  1. Download the “Clean Desktop” Automator function
  2. Make a desktop folder called “Inbox”
  3. Use command space and start typing “clean desktop” and hit enter when it pops up.

4. Hit Command-R to run the action.

5. Hit command-A to select all of the files on the desktop and hit enter.

6. Clean Desktop—once you do it a couple times it takes < 10 seconds to do.

Let me know if there’s a better way to do it I’m mikeyanderson on Twitter.
