7/7/14 —First Day at NSS

Day 1

My name is Mikey Badr, I’m an aspiring web developer currently living in Nashville, TN. The purpose of this blog is to document by journey as I begin a new direction. I have the fortune of being a student at Nashville Software School, and today marked the first day of class. We began by going over administrative and logistical things with John. After lunch we met our instructor, Chyld, and began setting ourselves up to actually start coding.

After installing VirtualBox, Chyld gave us a .vdi (virtual desktop image) of Ubuntu, a popular Linux distro. I learned how to SSH (can I use it as a verb?) into my virtual machine, which was exciting. We played around a bit with some UNIX terminal commands, which seem to be largely the same between OS X and Linux, though I’m sure there are some differences when we get more in depth.

The next challenge is vi (or vim), a text editor that runs directly from the terminal. It is a barebones text editor that has no GUI, but it seems very powerful. It has lots of shortcuts and many tips and tricks to learn, but it seems like once you get comfortable with it, it is extremely efficient. I’m excited to get into it, though it will certainly be a challenge.

I’m going to try and update this as much as possible, maybe even just a couple short paragraphs every day. It will serve a way for me to track my progress and record my thoughts and struggles and I dive into the world of web development.
