Learning skills by using them

This is the fifth post in “5 business ideas in 5 days” series.

(5) Skills learning platforms

This one is not so much of a specific platform idea, but rather a different approach to skills learning.

We have a lot of MOOCs and learning courses. Some are free, some are not.

The common issue is that many of these courses are designed as knowledge-based and are not focused on helping learners acquire specific skills.

For instance, if I want to learn how to design a social media campaign for my business, I can certainly find online courses on this topic. But I won’t have enough skills after completing the course to plan and design my own campaigns.

Learning concepts is not the same as doing things.

If you are new to this area, you are better off working alongside the person who actually knows how to do it and can show it to you. Even if this learning is not free, it may be still worth it.

You’d better learn it as you are designing your own social media campaign, and getting help from an experienced person as you need it.

There are a few platforms with learning courses that are designed this way. It is quite common to find a project-based course in software development. But, probably, there are not so many of those for other business fields — social media, accounting or management.

We would certainly benefit from more choices of skill-based courses we can find online.
