The way oil was used to actually drive western economy over the past hundred of so years, Big-IT would like to see data do the same for the next hundred years. This is at the heart of the “data is the new oil” meme.

In contrast, soon nobody will talk about “digital”, because it is just the way things appear. Actually we are already moving to post-digital, i.e. the period where the most influential generations don’t know non-digital. Digital stops being a thing all together. Now we still talk about “transformation” because the generation making decisions is from a generation pre-digital.
