If you’ve ever been to Mexico City before, you know that the list of places to discover in this growing metropolis can feel endless. Even the most ambitious travelers can have a hard time exploring everything on their agenda. You can check out one of the many mercaditos, meander around dozens of museums, or dine at one of the countless new, innovative restaurants. We have put together a list of 5 places to explore the OUTDOORS in Mexico City, hoping to offer a different perspective for a day spent in one of the most attractive cities in the world.

1. MERCADO DE FLORES

There are several different Mercado de Flores (flower markets) in Mexico City. Filled with beautiful, bright colors and an overwhelming symphony of smells, the markets carry a wide variety of national, imported and exotic flowers. National flowers usually include roses, carnations and chrysanthemums. Chat with a local and have a unique bouquet made for a special occasion or event. If you visit during October and November, you will probably see the Zempazuchitl flower, used to decorate the altars that honor the dead during Dia de Muertos.

2. UNAM MURAL TOUR

If it’s a beautiful, sunny day outside (chances are always high in Mexico City), take some time to see the UNAM Mural tour. Located right by the Copilco metro stop, UNAM is a public research university that has been ranked highly for its extensive research and innovation. The campus is also a UNESCO World Heritage site that was designed in the 20th century by some of Mexico’s most talented architects. While it may be difficult to attend the university (in 2016 it had an acceptance rate of only 8%), you can enjoy dozens of murals painted by some of Mexico City’s most talented artists. The best part about this walking tour — its free!

3. COYOACAN — HILDAGO PLAZA

The Coyoacan borough of Mexico City is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Known for its historic center, or Villa Coyoacan, it is located 10 km south of the main square of Mexico City. The historic center has a distinct bohemian feel that comes from the narrow cobblestone streets and small plazas, originally built during the colonial period. It is said that the word “coyoacan” means place of coyotes in Nahual, the language of the Aztecs. In the Jardin Cenenario of this borough you will find a beautiful bronze fountain that shows two coyotes playing. This fountain, along with beautiful historic buildings and street cafes, create the perfect setting for a day of exploration and relaxation in the heart of Mexico City.

4. FLOATING GARDENS OF XOCHIMILCO

Easily one of the most popular destinations of Mexico City, the floating gardens of Xochimilco are a twisted maze of waterways that run right through the center of the neighborhood. The gardens have been dubbed “Mexico’s Venice”, and you can rent colorful canal boats called trajineras that gently float you down the channels while you try to take-in your lush (and very photogenic) surroundings. While you are on your tour (you can rent trajineras by the hour) you will learn about the Aztec’s ingenious technique for growing food on the fertile riverbeds of the waterways.

5. CASA AZUL

Most people wouldn’t think that a house would be high on the list of “outdoor” places to visit, but Casa Azul is an exception. The lifelong home of world renowned Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, Casa Azul is now a museum and a testament to her life and the architecture of the 20th century. The house was built by Frida’s father in 1904 and was turned into a museum in 1958. While the interior of the home is filled with domestic objects, studio gear and folk art, the spectacular courtyard garden is unlike any other home-garden you have seen. When you visit you will see treasured plants with brightly colored pots and plant beds. You will also see an Aztec-style pyramid that her and artist Diego Rivera built, standing seven feet tall. Kahlo’s magical gardens at Casa Azul are a must-see, abundantly beautiful destination.
