Five Variations on the Freshest Margarita

Now that we’ve got it down that Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day, and we’re a little better versed on the world of Mexico City’s street art, it’s a great time to put that bar kit to use. With margaritas! Impressively inventive margaritas, with the freshest ingredients you can use and enticing substitutes where scarcity might be an issue. Let’s not forget that this is also a great opportunity to brew up some of that Agua de Jamaica and add some Tajín to your salted rim. You did stop by your local bodega, didn’t you? Hey, it’s your Cinco. We’re just here to make it the freshest.

The Milagro Blood Orange Margarita

  • 1.5 part Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 3/4 part Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur
  • 1 part Fresh Lime Juice
  • 3/4 part Agave Nectar

Garnish:

  • 1 Lime Wheel
  • 1 Blood Orange Wheel
  • Salt

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake, strain and pour over fresh ice in a salt-rimmed rocks glass.

Mexican Garden Margarita

  • 2 parts Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 1 part Fresh Lime Juice
  • 2 parts Pineapple Juice
  • 1/2 part Agave Nectar

Garnish:

  • 1 Lime Wheel
  • 1 Pineapple Leaf
  • 1 Cilantro Leaf
  • Salt

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake, strain and pour over fresh ice in a salt-rimmed rocks glass.

Red Belly Margarita

  • 2 parts Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 1 part Fresh Lime Juice
  • 3/4 part Agave Nectar
  • one quarter Red Bell Pepper
  • 2 slices Serrano Pepper

Garnish:

  • 1 Lime Wheel
  • Cracked Black Pepper
  • Salt

Muddle red bell and Serrano peppers in a Boston shaker. Add remaining ingredients and ice. Shake, strain and pour over fresh ice into a cracked pepper and salt-rimmed rocks glass.

Agua Verde a.k.a Avocado Margarita

  • 1.5 parts Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 1 part Fresh Lime Juice
  • 3/4 part Agave Nectar
  • one quarter Avocado
  • 3 slices Cucumber

Garnish:

  • 1 Cucumber Wheel
  • Salt

Combine ingredients and blend with one cup of ice. Pour into a rocks glass.

Flor de Jamaica Margarita

  • 2 parts Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 1/2 part Fresh Lime Juice
  • 3/4 part Agua de Jamaica*
  • 3/4 part Agave Nectar

Garnish:

  • 1 Lime Wheel or Fresh Hibiscus Flower
  • Salt

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake, strain and pour over fresh ice in a salt-rimmed rocks glass.

  • Agua de Jamaica: Combine 2:1 boiling water / dried Flor de Jamaica. Steep for 20 minutes and strain into a bottle. Chill.
